Ecole Holt Couture, Calgary
C Space, King Edward, was the location for Ecole Holt Couture’s 10th anniversary show on November 3rd, 2018. EHC describes itself as “a private, comprehensive school of sewing and fashion design, dedicated to teaching the fine art of haute couture sewing.”
The founder, Elfriede Holtkamp, a highly accomplished couturiere in Calgary, says talent was “dropped in the cradle” with her. Her first creation, at age 7, was a doll dress that won a competition and was the first step toward her profession. A long and successful career followed and in 1992, after suffering a broken wrist, the decision was made to create the school, offering a unique curriculum combining European haute couture techniques with 60 years of experience featuring originality of design, quality fabrics and perfection of fit and finish.
Hosted by a gracious Jutta Holtkamp, full time instructor and Regisrar at EHC and daughter of the founder, the event offered entertainment and education. Before the show, guests were treated to a meet and greet reception with the students and given the opportunity to examine fabrics, hear about the techniques and see first hand the commitment the students gave to their education in good design, pattern drafting, garment fitting and construction.
With a backdrop of fine music by the Joshua Sung Park Trio, the students themselves modelled their creations. This was not fast fashion. The quality of fabric, the exceptional fit and quality of construction was evident in each piece shown.
