I wanted to talk about my close friends and Directors, Tania and Vishal Malpuria of Sparq Productions Inc. Vishal and Tania are a husband and wife team, who started off dancing in the Bollywood film industry many years ago. Since then, they have become well-known choreographers, event planners, and teachers.

They moved to Calgary from Mumbai in order to settle down and start their family, as well as become pioneers in establishing Calgary’s Bollywood scene. Blessed with two young children, Syesha and Shayan, the Malpuria’s are well-integrated members of the Calgary Arts scene.

Together, Tania and Vish developed Sparq Productions Inc., a Calgary-based Bollywood dance company and school. Sparq is made up of the Professional and Performance Teams of dancers, who entertain at events all over the city. Vishal, along with some of the Professional team dancers, are instructors at classes offered throughout the city as well.

One of Sparq’s main accomplishments, is to host an annual fundraising performance, showcasing professional and amateur artists in various genres of dance and music. Partial proceeds from ticket sales are donated to a fundraiser selected by the Sparq team each year.

In 2015, on the morning of the ONE show, tragedy struck. Vishal had suffered a stroke related to a flare up of his sarcoidosis. Thankfully the stroke wouldn’t cause any permanent damage, however Vishal’s stay in the hospital led to the discovery that he would require a new heart. The family’s many friends and family members quickly stepped up to help out with Tania and the kids while Vish waited for a miracle in the hospital. And that miracle came on September 26th, just four months after being placed on the transplant list.

Vishal was airlifted immediately to Edmonton where he underwent a successful heart transplant surgery on September 27th, the same day which happened to be his daughter Syesha’s 9th birthday. Vishal’s positive spirit and personality made for a quick recovery.

Although his life will be forever impacted by his new heart, he and the family have a renewed sense of life and purpose. Vishal is back in the classroom, and despite ALL of our attempts to get him to rest and take it easy, he still has the music and Bollywood spirit in him and can be found grooving in the studio regularly.
